Genius Beauty Gadgets You Never Knew You Needed

Genius Beauty Gadgets

You know how it’s hard to imagine a world without email or iPhones? That’s how beauty junkies will feel about the nine innovative grooming gadgets I rounded up for SheKnows. Each problem-solving tool will revolutionize your routine to the point that you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. I’ve previously waxed poetic about #7 for StyleBistro and am adding #2 to my wish list, stat. See them all here.

SPF Body Lotions For Everyday Use

SPF Body Lotions

It’s no secret I take great pride in my skincare routine, which includes slathering on an SPF face cream every morning, regardless of the weather or season. While I’m diligent about protecting my visage from the sun, I recently realized I can’t say the same about the rest of my body—unless I’m hitting the pool or the beach.

Since no one wants to wear gloppy sunscreen to the office, I did some research and found there’s a happy compromise: SPF-infused body lotions designed for daily wear. I rounded up seven non-greasy options for SheKnows, and you can check them all out here.

The Liberty Project Launch

A few weeks ago, an editor reached out to me about contributing to a brand-new site called The Liberty Project, which would serve as the digital relaunch of the historic Liberty magazine (published from the 1920s through ’40s). Just like the print product it’s modeled after, the site’s focus is on first-person stories, and while I hadn’t written one in quite some time, I was up for the challenge. I settled on writing about two very different topics: the lesson I learned from Advanced Style star Lynn Dell Cohen and how my trip to New Zealand made me a Bachelor fan.

You can read both essays here.

Styling Video Series

Back in November, I helped put together StyleBistro’s first-ever video series, which focused on how to style various wardrobe staples for four different personas (boho, downtown, classic and glam). In addition to pulling samples and assembling the outfits, I ended up being a bit more involved than I had initially anticipated—as the star of the clips! Our model canceled on us the night before and I wasn’t going to let all that market work go to waste, so I jumped right in front of the camera. I also ended up hiring a video editor and overseeing the final edits to get these bad boys finished in a timely manner, so you could say they were a labor of love for me.

The first one centered around boyfriend jeans

Next up, we tackled the white button-up shirt

And last but not least, the little black dress got its moment to shine.

My new gig at StyleBistro

As astute readers may have noticed on my Bio page, I recently left Time Out New York to become the deputy editor at StyleBistro. In the few short weeks that I’ve been with the fashion and beauty site, I’ve learned a ton and written a quite a few stories to boot:

Valentine’s Day gift guide

Vday womenVday men

I was tasked with finding Valentine’s Day gifts under $100 for men and women that strike that delicate balance of being romantic yet not cheesya tall order, especially when it comes to the former sex. I’m happy to report that I found more than a handful of unique presents for Time Out New York, such as DVF’s lip-print cosmetic pouches from Piperlime (left) and an endearingly possessive decanter set from Uncommon Goods (right).

See what other affordable gifts I discovered for guys and girls, respectively.

Trend watch: Detox beauty products

Detox beauty products

Writing this story on new detoxifying beauty products (and testing all of the products for it) was a great way to start my 2014 with a clean slate, beauty-wise, and that was the whole premise behind it. From clarifying shampoos and nail-rehab kits to a gradual week-long facial peel, I tracked down the latest offerings for Time Out New York that would slough away last year’s sins.

New store: Lush Spa

I first wrote about natural cosmetics brand Lush’s NYC spa back in August for Time Out New York‘s annual fall preview issue and was so excited for the English-inspired retreat to arrive stateside (they had previously existed only in the U.K.). The opening got pushed back a few months, as most construction projects in the city do, but I finally got to check it out in person this past weekend and was not disappointed.

As I noted in my new store writeup for this week’s issue, music plays a huge role in the treatments—the soundtrack to my Synesthesia massage acoustically captured 24 hours in the English countryside—and there’s a heavy British influence as a nod to the company’s heritage (expect your session to end with a proper cup of tea).

You can read more about the spa’s offerings here.

My style guide to NYC: TheStylisted

My Style Guide- The Stylisted

Since at-home beauty-booking site TheStylisted just launched in NYC, founders Julia Carmona and Lauren Katzberg were kind enough to share their favorite lesser-known West Village shops in this week’s Time Out New York. Not only did they divulge where they go for feminine frocks (Darling) and handsome gifts (Leo Design), but they gave insider tips such as checking inside the ottomans at Blessed Peacemakers for hidden stock.
